And Vaccaro, who played the son in both Daddy's Home movies, is believable as a shy, slightly nerdy orphan who's hoping to fit in at a new home and school. The House with a Clockin Its Walls seems like an odd choice for gore-master Eli Roth, thedirector of the hard-R Hostel and its sequel (those movies gave rise to the term “torture porn”). To say Roth is“restrained” for this production would be an understatement, although there area few disquieting images that make this a dubious option for very young and/orsensitive children. The novel, written by John Bellairs, featured illustrationsby Edward Gorey, and Roth has attempted to replicate their essence on-screen.This, as much as anything, may be why the movie occasionally has a TimBurton-esque feel.

Although the movie isn’t bad enough to qualify as a slog for olderviewers, the boilerplate story makes it tough to stay engaged. Unlike the Harry Potter movies, The House with a Clock in Its Wallsfails to find the sweet spot for cross-generational appeal. Lewis returns to school with more confidence and gets back at Tarby and his friends by magically bouncing a basketball off their faces and into the basket, impressing his other classmates. He then befriends a girl named Rose Rita Pottinger, who appears to have a crush on Lewis. At the end of the day, Jonathan and Florence are shown picking up Lewis, the three of them now living like a regular family.

Florence gets taken by Jonathan's mutated snake named Snakespeare, leaving Lewis and Jonathan to face the villains on their own. Isaac awaits as the lunar eclipse is setting, which will activate the clock's power. He and Selena are protected from the clock's effects. Lewis and Jonathan try to fight back, but Jonathan is morphed into a weird baby that still has his adult head. The eclipse happens, and people around town start to de-age to children.

Lewis Barnavelt (Vaccaro), a young orphan, has to help his warlock uncle Jonathan (Black) and their witch neighbor Mrs. Zimmerman (Blanchett) to find a clock that could cause the end of the world. But the plot—about Lewis (Owen Vaccaro), a newly orphaned pre-teen who becomes a powerful warlock with some help from kooky uncle Jonathan (Jack Black)—is mostly adequate. And the scene-to-scene pacing is patient enough to establish the importance of certain key plot points and character dynamics. And the menagerie of computer-generated monsters, which includes talking dummies and sentient jack-o'-lanterns, are slick-looking.
Lewis spots Isaac in the window of a house of a neighbor, Mrs. Hanchett. He "rescues" her from Isaac and brings her across the street to Jonathan's house, but before he can find Jonathan, Isaac confronts them at the front door. He reveals that Mrs. Hanchett is really Selena, who killed Mrs. Hanchett, took her place, and used her bones to make the clock's key. It was also Selena who took the form of Lewis's mother to persuade him to summon Isaac. Isaac explains that his hidden clock's blueprints came from the demon Azazel, who had given them to Isaac as he sought relief from the visions of horror he had witnessed during the war.
Having the encampment happen on the Wednesday morning of the hearing was an incredible, in some senses, interesting strategy to direct eyes to different places. Since October 7, there has certainly been constant escalation in terms of tension on campus. And that became a huge moment in what was characterized as suppression of pro-Palestinian activism on campus, effectively rendering those groups, quote, unquote, unauthorized. So these students in real-time are beginning to test some of the things that Columbia’s president has just said before Congress.
Jack Black is a steadypresence and Owen Vaccaro provides young viewers with a stand-in presenceinside the story. It’s hard to recommend the film for older movie-goers(especially if they aren’t accompanying their offspring) – it’sstraightforward, lacking in complexity, and the few small pleasantries itoffers aren’t worth 105 minutes spent in a theater. Kids, on the other hand, will likely be enthralled. Thismovie is in their strike zone from the easy-to-identify-with main character tothe bright, colorful visuals and the creepy villain. It’s scary in a way thatshouldn’t cause many nightmares, although the homicidal jack-o-lanterns may bea little intense for anyone under six.
Lewis takes the book back and puts it away, leading Tarby to go home and says Lewis is just a "weird kid". Lewis then gets up and goes around the house in the dark and finds several creepy-looking dolls and Jonathan smashing a wall with an ax. Lewis runs away freaked out and sees the windows, piano, and a "pet chair" named Chairy among other things coming to life.
Lewis consults the Magic 8-Ball, which says "Say goodbye". He realizes that he has to let go of the pain of losing his parents to harness his true power. He breaks the clock by dropping the ball, which blocks the clock's gears. Then Lewis blasts Isaac and Selena with magic he channels from the clock. They fall, de-age, and are disintegrated leaving only their suit and robe.
The clock will turn back time so that humanity never existed and undo the horrors that he had witnessed. Jonathan, Florence and Lewis are chased from the house. In 1955, after his parents are killed in a car crash, ten-year-old Lewis Barnavelt moves to live with his Uncle Jonathan in New Zebedee, Michigan.
